Welcome to Art
Instructor: Leslie Williamson
Welcome to the art page for Maugham. Students in grades K-5 will meet for art once a week. In general, art lessons will build throughout the year from the basic elements of art and principles of design, and will become more involved each year as the students develop their art skills and concepts. The notion of creativity will be addressed throughout our lessons, always encouraging students to make connections and build on existing ideas. Lessons will often also link to one or more significant artists as reference and inspiration for the students' work. I hope by the end of each student's time at Maugham he/she will have acquired a solid foundation in art history and a variety of art making processes, and will know how to apply this knowledge in the service of making expressive artistic statements.
Degrees and Certifications:
Master of Science in the Conservation of Artistic and Historic Works University of Delaware/Winterthur Museum
My background prior to teaching was as an art conservator. Conservation of artworks involves both preservation and restoration, and is closely linked to material science. I completed my graduate internship at the Museum of Modern Art, held a fellowship at the Guggenheim Museum, and worked as conservator at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of the American Indian. I hope I can share with the students my varied experiences working in museums, and inspire them to go see art!
Please feel free to stop by the art room to see what we are working on. I am always in the room at the end of the school day and would be happy to meet you. For any other concerns the best way to contact me is via email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
