Dear THS Theater Community,
The Fall Play will be Spring Awakening. I support Mr. Ahn-Cooper in his selection of this material for the reasons he states below. This performance will be PG-13, and anyone under high school age will be required to have an adult present in order to attend. Although this may limit our audience, we feel this show is worth it for the experience it will provide the THS students who are in it and who attend.
Thank you for your support.
Spring Awakening is a rock musical that is set in the late 19th century. It is based on a play written by Frank Wedekind in 1891. The material that was turned into the musical is just as relevant today as it was then. The musical debuted on Broadway in 2006. It starred Tenafly’s own graduate, Lea Michele and won eight Tony awards, including Best Musical. Spring Awakening is an important and topical work of art. The musical allows for an artistic and creative expression of the pressures of being a teenager. The themes, although challenging and mature, are ones that high school students across the country deal with on a daily basis. Performing this show will allow for an honest and open dialogue to take place among the students. We at Tenafly High School have produced equally difficult and mature shows such as Rent and The Laramie Project. This show promises to enhance the emotional and educational lives of all involved. This particular musical is not suitable for children under the age of 13.
