Mrs. Brown-8th Grade Language Arts
Take Care of Yourself, Take Care of Each Other, Take Care of This Place
Welcome to 8th Grade Language Arts. I hope everyone had a fun and relaxing summer.
Our Goal: We will work together to strengthen our ability as readers and writers using the New Jersey Student Learning Standards as a guide. Also, we will focus on identifying and using positive reading strategies across all types of text.
Reading: Our class will read Fiction and Non-Fiction material. In addition, every student will read from an independent book (*80 minutes a week) and write about their reading through a variety of activities.
Writing: Writing is an important focus in Language Arts. We will craft writing pieces that persuade an audience, inform an audience, and entertain an audience. Each student will work on creating writing goals and strategies that are relevant for his or her writing process.
I-Search: **Students will research a topic of choice and create a presentation for the I-Search Fair. We will work on a portion of the project in school and the rest will be completed at home. I will send home an I-Search calendar at the beginning of January.
Materials: The following materials are needed for class:
* A Language Arts binder with five sections: Warm-Up/Quick Write, Story-telling, Reading, Essays, I-Search
* One pocket folder
* A pen or a pencil
* Ear buds
Technology: We will use Chromebooks on a consistent basis to access literacy resources and complete assignments.
Homework: Students will be expected to complete a minimum of 80 minutes of reading per week. This should occur in 20 minute sessions four times a week. Students will complete one reading task per week based on their reading for a classwork grade. At the end of each novel, students will complete a separate assignment to demonstrate understanding of the text.
Grading: Assignments will be graded on a point system. The number of points earned divided by the number of possible points. **All grades will be posted on the parent portal.
Extra Help: I am available for extra help every morning from 7:55 to 8:15 or after school. Please confirm with me that you will be coming for extra help.
