Degrees and Certifications:

Dr. Robert Kennedy

My name is Dr. Robert Kennedy and I am a science teacher at Tenafly High School. I received my BS degree in Biology from St. Peter’s College in Jersey City, NJ and my M.S. and Ph.D. from Fordham University, Bronx, NY after submitting a thesis describing the biology of a new insect virus.  My Master’s project was in insect biology in the New York Botanical Garden.  While in graduate school I received the University Teaching Fellowship and the W. Alton Jones Fellowship to study insect cell culture at the Alton Jones Cell Science Center in Lake Placid.  After completing my doctoral research I was a Schering Plough Foundation Fellow for one year, and worked on antibody biochemistry problems and the purification of interleukin (now IL-1).  I spent 10 years at Pharmacia and 15 years at GE Healthcare as a protein biochemist and a faculty member in Bio-Pharma Education.  Prior to joining the teaching staff at Tenafly, I was a teacher at Fordham College and The New York Botanical Garden. I was an adjunct professor in biochemistry at University of Maryland, the University of Virginia, Norfolk campus, and the Universite d’Montreal.  I have authored or coauthored more than 100 posters and papers including book chapters in Methods in Enzymology, Current Protocols in Protein Science and Handbook of Bioseparations. I serve as a peer reviewer and editor of the Bioprocessing Journal.  Because I have traveled extensively to and worked in Uppsala, Sweden, I can read and speak Swedish.  I am a member of the American Chemical Society, American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Sigma Xi, the scientific research honor society.  Outside of school, I am an avid reader and sing in several choruses.  In 2015 I was elected a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London. I am an AP Reader for Environmental Science.
