MFA - Frequently Asked Questions

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) refers to an additional layer of security that is added to the login process.

MFA relies on two forms of authentication: something you know, and something you have with you. The something you know is your password. The something you have with you can be a mobile device or hardware token. This means that even if your password is hacked, your account will remain secure. 

The only data that Duo stores for a user is the subscriber's primary username (UML email address) and information about your second factor, such as a phone number (if using a phone for the service) or the serial number of your hardware token (if not using a phone for the service).

Duo does not access your other apps or other data on your phone; it uses some base functionality of the phone and a certificate that identifies your phone to ensure accurate identification.

The Duo Mobile app will request access to the camera when activating the app (when using the QR barcode), but this is the only time that the camera will be activated by Duo Mobile. Under no circumstances does Duo Mobile activate devices such as microphone or GPS.

You will be able to choose a primary authentication method when you register, which you can change or update at any time. IT Services recommends using the Duo app as it provides a better user experience. 

MFA is required for all staff, including administrators. 

Duo authentication will be required for logging into the TPS Network, all Google sites, Gmail, Genesis, and for Remote Access (when available).

Additional technologies will continue to be added throughout the year.

Each time you log into any of the technologies protected by Duo. This includes if you are timed out during the school day.

If you forget your mobile device at home, you can use your backup authentication method. If that doesn't solve the problem, please contact the Technology Help Desk.

Enrollment for access to identified systems is mandatory. Consequently, for the increased protection of your own personal information and the information of our staff and students, everyone with a TPS email address must enroll in Duo Security.

Access to most TPS technology will be protected by Duo. If you do not set up Duo prior to the September 1st live date, access to most TPS technologies, including sign in to desktops and laptops, will be denied.

To change your phone number, go to https://tenafly.login.duosecurity.com. Then follow the instructions for adding a device in the MultiFactor Authentication at TPS with DUO.

There is no cost to download or use the Duo Mobile smartphone app. If not using the Smartphone App, text messages and voice calls are sent only when you request them, and they would be billed by your carrier in the same way that any other text message or call would.
