Western Civilization Humanities Honors examines the history, art and philosophy of the West, from the ancient Greeks to the late 20th Century. During the first semester, we study selected topics in Greece, Rome, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Reformation and the era of National Monarchies. During the second semester, we study the Scientific Revolution, the Enlightenment, the French and Industrial Revolutions, 19th century ideologies, the era of the World Wars, and the post-war era.
Grades are computed using a point system. Homework is usually assessed by short quizzes, which are worth only a few points, and tests are usually 60-80 points. Various papers and presentations are worth 30 points or more. Each semester is worth 45% of your grade. There is a final assessment worth 10%.
Writing is a large component of the students' grades. Graded writing assignments will account for approximately half the points earned. Class participation is essential for success.
