Ms. Beatriz Peláez-Martínez

I am part of the World Language faculty at Tenafly High School.
I expect a lot from my students and I try to model such high expectations by always pushing myself. I strive to make sure that they not only learn to speak the language I teach, but that they have a greater sense of its cultural and historical significance. I teach Spanish, a language spoken in over twenty-two countries and I feel that by helping my students to become more proficient in this language that I am not only giving them a key to a whole new culture but making sure that they know how to appreciate what this key will allow them to experience once they walk in the door of the Spanish speaking world. I feel exactly the same way about Italian, the other language I teach.
I was born in New York City and raised in New Jersey.  My parents are originally from Cuba, so I grew up speaking Spanish and English at home.
I became a teacher through the Alternate Route Program, which essentially means that this wasn’t my original career choice.  In fact, I graduated from Rutgers University in 1998 with a BA in Art History.   I have lived in New Jersey for most of my life but I also lived overseas in Italy for four years.
I originally taught at Middletown High School North in Middletown, New Jersey.  I have also taught at Rutgers University.  I have been doing this for almost twenty years now and I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else.
I currently hold a Masters degree in Foreign Language Teaching and I may one day get another Masters in a related field, perhaps pursuing a degree in Spain.
I have been a mentor teacher and a presenter at NECTFL, The Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. My last presentation at NECFTL was a featured presentation you can read about here (pg. 45). I will be presenting at FLENJ in 2021 with Kate Okeson the curriculum work I did for the pilot of the LGBTQ/ADA inclusive instruction in 2020
