• Outline of 4th Grade Curriculum

    Throughout the year students will read authentic non-fiction such as the newspaper or magazines, listen to read-aloud books, independently read books and short stories, participate in buddy reading, small group reading and read and discuss poetry.
    Individual assessments are used to determine strengths and weaknesses of each reader. Small-group instruction based on individual needs will be used to target all areas of literacy, including vocabulary and spelling development.
    The student will:
     apply major cue systems to read, predict, and confirm using sense, language structure and letter-sound association
     analyze various aspects of literature being read through conversations and writing
     evaluate purpose for reading and choose appropriate strategies
     demonstrate greater sense as self, as a reader, and his/her own interest in reading
     analyze the meaning of text using multiple strategies
     synthesize the meaning of text
     expand range of text to read
     choose to pursue reading independently
     integrate reading strategies to interpret text
     apply knowledge of previous text to read new text
     use conversation as a way of making meaning from a text
     synthesize the elements necessary for a rich independent reading life
