*COVID-Exclusion Criteria and Timeframes

  • The following COVID scenarios result in exclusion from in-person instruction:

    • Any vaccinated or unvaccinated student who is experiencing at least two of the following symptoms: fever, chills, rigors/chills, myalgia/muscle aches, headache, sore throat, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, congestion, or runny nose; OR at least one of the following symptoms: cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, new olfactory disorder, or new taste disorder.
NOTE:  For students with chronic illness (allergies, asthma, etc.), only new symptoms or symptoms worse than baseline should be used to fulfill symptom-based exclusion criteria.
    • An unvaccinated student who has not been diagnosed with COVID-19 in the past 90 days and was identified as being exposed to an individual diagnosed with COVID.
    • A student who has been diagnosed with COVID.

Symptomatic Individuals: Regardless of vaccination status or COVID diagnosis within 90 days, if a student or staff experiences COVID-compatible symptoms, they are to be excluded from school.

    • A negative PCR test result is required to return to school if COVID-symptoms are reported for more than 2 days to the school.
    • If not tested, the individual may choose exclusion from school for 10 days, but will not be offered the opportunity to participate virtually beyond Day 3 without a COVID test in progress or with positive results.

COVID Diagnosis:  Persons who test positive for COVID-19 but who are asymptomatic will be excluded from school for 10 days from the positive test result.

IMPORTANT:  An alternate diagnosis (including a positive strep test or influenza swab) without a negative COVID-19 (PCR) test is not acceptable for individuals, who meet COVID-19 exclusion criteria, to return to school earlier than the timeframes above. A negative PCR test is required.

Exposure/Contact Tracing for Unvaccinated Individuals:  Only unvaccinated individuals (who do not have a documented COVID diagnosis within 90 days) in close contact of staff or students who tested positive for COVID-19 are to be excluded from school.  The affected individual may choose to be tested for COVID-19 5-7 days following exposure.  A negative PCR test result will enable the student to return to school on day 7.

If the individual chooses not to test within 5-7 days following exposure, the exclusion periods are as follows:

    • High Transmission (orange): an exposed close contact is excluded from school for 14 days
    • Moderate or Low Transmission (yellow or green): an exposed close contact is excluded from school for 10 days

Transmission determinations are published weekly by the NJDOH. Currently, our region is classified as Moderate (yellow).

For any and all other absences, Policy and Regulation 5200 will apply.
