AHERA Notification to Staff/Parents

  • In accordance with the United States Environmental Protection Agency's asbestos-containing materials in the School Rule (40CFR 763 Subpart E, commonly referred to as the AHERA Regulations), the Tenafly Board of Education has contracted with Environmental Remediation & Management Inc. to act as their “Designated Person” as defined under the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) of 1986.

AHERA required that all educational facilities be inspected for asbestos – containing materials and develop a remedial plan of action on or before May 9, 1989. In addition, each educational facility shall reassess all identified asbestos – containing materials or materials assumed to be asbestos, at least once every six months (periodic surveillance) and re-inspect those facilities every three years (Tri-annual re-inspection).

The Tenafly Board of Education is in compliance with these inspection requirements. The most recent Tri-Annual re-inspection was performed in March, 2018. “Periodic Surveillance” inspections are performed every March and September, unless a Tri-annual re-inspection is due.

A copy of each school Management Plan is on file in the main office of each building, as well as in the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds Office.  The Management Plan is available for inspection by employees, parents and the public, at no charge during regular school hours.

This past summer, an asbestos abatement effort was undertaken at the Tenafly Middle School. The project involved the non-friable removal of floor tile from one classroom. The project was performed in compliance with all applicable State and Federal rules, regulations and guidelines. The details of the project can be viewed within the Asbestos Management Plan.
