The Nutcracker
  • Though The Nutcracker Suite isn't a genre, we are using this piece as our listening for the month of December. This famous musical masterwork is very important to be familiar with and learn the background of. PLUS we have some fun classroom activities to accompany the pieces!

     About The Nutcracker Suite

The Nutcracker was composed in 1982 by Pyotr (Peter) Ilyich Tchaikovsky. He composed The Nutcracker as a two-act ballet, but it was not a success. Instead, he took 8 musical mumbers from the ballet and created a 20-minute suite. A suite is a collection of songs.

The ballet is based on the story "The Nutcracker and the King of Mice". The ballet is about a young German girl who dreams of a Nutcracker Prince and his fierce battle against a Mouse King on Christmas Eve.
